Presto Contractors is an excavation contractor based in Waynesboro in Wayne County. Most sites are high in one spot and low in another. Cut and fill evens that out. A dozer cuts the high side down and pushes that dirt into the low side. Then it grades the ground level, or to the slope the plan calls for.
Excavators handle the digging. They dig out soft spots, cut back banks and load our own trucks. Skid steers work the tight spots, like behind a house or along a fence line.
Before any dirt moves, the ground may need clearing. Trees and stumps come out first with land clearing and root raking.
Water is behind a lot of dirt problems. A ditch fills in, and the next storm sends water across the drive. We cut new ditches, clean out old ones and grade the ground so water has a way off the site. For water that has to pass under a drive, we lay storm drain pipe and culverts.
Dirt that has to leave the site goes out on our own trucks. That covers spoil from digging and dirt too soft or wet to build on. When a site is short on dirt, we haul in fill, gravel or rock as part of the job.
Rain sets the calendar for dirt work here. Waynesboro averages about 60 inches a year in NOAA's climate normals, and December through March is the wettest stretch. Late summer and fall are usually the driest window for big dirt jobs.
Most soils mapped in the USDA soil survey for Wayne County have fine sandy loam on top. What lies under that layer shapes the job. On the ridges, the survey maps well-drained loamy soils with a red subsoil. It rates them good or fair as fill for roads.
Many hillsides carry heavy clay, often red, under the topsoil instead. That clay shrinks as it dries and swells when it gets wet, and water moves through it very slowly. The survey rates it poor as fill for roads. Clay like that may need to come out, with better fill hauled in on our own trucks.
Creek and river bottoms are wetter still. Along the Chickasawhay beside Waynesboro, the survey maps much of the bottomland as frequently flooded. It rates that ground very limited for houses and roads. Dirt work there starts with where the water will go.
