The old house burned and the county wants it down. Maybe a mobile home out back is past saving, or a barn is leaning after a storm. We tear down houses, including homes damaged by fire or a storm. Mobile homes and outbuildings come down the same way. An excavator pulls the structure down and loads the debris straight into our dump trucks. A skid steer cleans up what is left, and a dozer grades the lot.
One of our jobs was a fire-damaged house. When we left, the house was gone and the lot was cleared and graded. On commercial and industrial sites, old buildings come down as part of our industrial and commercial civil work.
For a single house in Mississippi, usually not. MDEQ, the state environmental agency, generally exempts houses with four or fewer dwelling units from its asbestos rules. The exemption does not cover a development project with more than one small residential building on a site. A house torn down along with non-residential buildings loses it too.
Commercial and industrial buildings fall under the rule. MDEQ calls for an asbestos inspection by an MDEQ-certified inspector, then a demolition notice ten working days ahead. Across the line, Alabama's ADEM asks for a 10-day notice before regulated demolition. Alabama also exempts private homes of four or fewer units that stay residential.
Even when the rule does not apply, MDEQ recommends getting asbestos out of a house before demolition, where practical. It lists ceiling tiles, floor covering and mastic, cement siding and asphalt roofing among the asbestos materials common in houses. If a survey turns up asbestos, a certified asbestos abatement contractor handles that part before we start.
Every load leaves on our own trucks. In Mississippi, demolition debris goes to permitted landfills and rubbish sites under MDEQ rules. Class I rubbish sites can take building debris such as wood, metal, brick, concrete and roofing.
If you want the old slab and foundation gone, concrete removal is part of the job. We break them out and haul the pieces off on our trucks. Buried lines get located through Mississippi 811 or Alabama 811 before that digging starts.
Then we fill the holes and grade the lot to drain. When a lot needs extra fill, we haul it in as part of the dirt work. What is left is a clean, graded lot.
